Smooth Fox Terrier

The Smooth Fox Terrier originated in the British Isles in the 17th century. Owned by farmers who needed help eradicating vermin, the breed used its keen nose, remarkable eyesight and stamina to drive fox and other quarry out from their underground dens. Although seldom used for hunting and eradicating vermin today, the breed still maintains its drive and determination.

The Smooth Fox Terrier is an active, friendly and playful breed. Smooth Fox Terriers are highly trainable and excel in events such as agility and obedience. The dog is generally gay, lively and active. Speed and endurance must be looked to as well as power. The Terrier was developed to stand like a cleverly made hunter and then gallop to follow his fox. Although Smooth Fox Terriers are seldom used for fox hunting these days, they excel at earth dog trials and are constant clowns; they are great with children and love a bouncing rubber ball.

The Smooth Fox Terriers are one of the best kept secrets in the dog world. They make superb family pets. Because they have not been over-bred, they are in general a very healthy breed. It is not unheard of for them to live up to 16+ years. Their medium size makes them almost a perfect fit for any lifestyle.
